Reich on mysticism and mechanism
"Since a layer of viciousness is interpolated between the deep, natural core ('God,' 'Jesus,' 'the good' 'one's soul,' etc.) and the superficial appearance, the original 'goodness' is shut off and becomes inaccessible. Therefore, quite logically and correctly, the emotions are considered 'bad' and the intellect is 'good.' Co-existence and cooperation of sane emotions and a sane intellect are unthinkable. All institutions of the armored human animal are geared to this dichotomy. The living function becomes perverted into the MYSTICAL, and the 'brain stuff' into the MECHANICAL kind of existence. The 'bad' instincts are kept in check by 'good' morals....The bad instincts are summed up under the heading DEVIL, the moral demands under the heading GOD. Thus, God is fighting the devil, and the devil is eternally tempting poor man to sin against God."
